Das Interview wurde am 31. August 2003 im Tonstudio des Apollo-Theaters geführt.
Volker Smyrek (VS): How long have you been working as a Sound Designer for
musicals?
Richard Ryan (RR): My first show was “Phantom of the Opera” in London and that was
in 1986. That was me just as mixer, running radio microphones and that kind of staff.
Then I worked for about four years for Martin Levan. He is a well-known Sound
Designer. As I started to design on my own, I left him. So I suppose, I’m designing
shows for about 10 years.
VS: What is your usual approach for designing a system for a show?
RR: You start by talking to the musical supervisor and the director about the style of
show they got in mind, how big the orchestra is, how many people there are in the cast.
So that you just can start getting numbers of the radiomics that you need, how big the
desk is you need. If they got some demo-tracks, you listen to that to find out what kind
of style of music it is. Then you visit the theatre to find out how big it is, how many
speakers you need to cover it. The music defines how you design a system!
VS: What criteria do you use in selecting loudspeakers for a design?
RR: Again: It depends on the style of music. It’s all about music! Different loudspeakers
have different characteristics. Some are designed for Rock’n’Roll, some are designed
